A rib mid-calf sock, knitted in Italy from Filo di Scozia. The yarn is long-staple Egyptian cotton, twisted two-ply and double-mercerised. The long staple and the mercerising are what stop it pilling — and pilling is what wears socks out.

Material: 80% Filo di Scozia cotton, 20% polyamide. The polyamide adds stretch and recovery.

Construction: Ribbed mid-calf. The rib stretches with the calf and holds its shape through the day.

Care: Machine wash at 30°C, inside out. Dry flat. Do not tumble dry.

Made in Italy.

The machines that knit fine cotton socks are an Italian speciality, and the skill to run them has concentrated in the north of the country over generations. We went to a mill that has made little else for decades. Built up to a standard rather than down to a price - like everything in the range.

Cared for properly, a good pair lasts years rather than months. Wash them cool and inside out, and dry them flat. Don't tumble dry - the heat shrinks cotton and tires the stretch. Done that way, they hold their shape and their colour wash after wash.
